Spirulina Seaweed and Aloe: a panacea for the skin

Detergente Capelli Corpo, Antica Barbieria Colla

The new Hair&Body Cleansing is characterized by the presence of two valuable ingredients that together form a very beneficial combination for facial skin, hair and scalp: Spirulina Seaweed and Aloe.

In fact, thanks to the combination of the two components and their moisturizing action, it is possible to reduce the itching usually generated by scalp flaking.

In addition to preventing the appearance of dandruff, the cleanser makes the hair healthier and shinier and fortifies the follicles, promoting the elimination of the static that often characterizes the thinnest and most fragile hair.

Benefiting from the special combination of Spirulina Algae and Aloe is the epidermis in three hundred and sixty degrees.

The steps to achieve optimal cleansing

How to use the Hair&Body Cleansing as part of your daily beauty routine? Simply apply a small amount of the product to the skin, even performing a gentle massage to promote its beneficial effect, rinsing thoroughly after about ten seconds.

On the hair, on the other hand, the cleanser is used like a usual shampoo, massaging and letting the product act for a few seconds before proceeding with a copious rinse with lukewarm water.

Cleansing and moisturizing: some useful tips

Optimal cleansing of the face helps preserve the beauty and health of the epidermis, even before and after shaving. In addition, to ensure that the skin gets all the hydration it needs, it can prove very useful to apply to dry skin the new Hyaluronic Acid&Caffeine Face Cream, a concentrate of beneficial active ingredients that help give evenness and firmness.

Why not also try the Alcohol Free Deodorant Spray to normalize sweating while respecting the physiological balance of the skin?

Antica Barbieria Colla’s characters: Giuliano Gramigna

Giuliano Gramigna was a writer, poet and literary critic, known in particular for his long collaboration with a prominent Italian newspaper, Il Corriere della Sera. Franco Bompieri tells how he became a customer of Antica Barbieria Colla:

Text taken from Presi per i capelli by Franco Bompieri (Mondadori 2000)

« “He was so beautiful that it looked like he had just come out of Colla’s hot towels’”.

This quote in the novel Marcel Ritrovato by Giuliano Gramigna, in addition to flattering me, filled me with curiosity towards the author; so one day I called him at the office and using all the courtesy possible I invited him to come in person to see if the hot towels were up to his novel.

After a few weeks Gramigna appeared on the doorstep of the shop. I recognized him immediately, also because there was always a picture of him on the title page of his books.

After a professional shave, I let him try the hot towels. Gramigna lightly caressed his face and said: “Never has a quote been more focused” ».

Barber plates: collector’s memorabilia

In our shop, a series of plates are displayed on a wall that at first glance might make you think of simple ornaments, but which are actually ancient barber plates collected over the years by Franco Bompieri.

These are rather shallow plates with a sort of split on one side; those who had a shave generally held this object in their hand under the chin and slipped their neck into the hollow; while the barber was shaving, the soap he removed from the face was gradually deposited on the plate. Furthermore, since there was no running water, the plates were also used to rinse the brush and razor.

Barber plates were made of various materials, even quite valuable:

  • ceramic;
  • porcelain;
  • majolica (therefore made and painted entirely by hand);
  • copper;
  • pewter (an alloy composed mainly of tin and other metals such as copper or silver, used especially for artistic tableware and liturgical objects);

and they were often embellished with unique and original decorations.

Today the barber plates are no longer used, but the most refined and ancient (there are examples dating back to the 16th-17th century) represent real artistic artifacts, which have become items for collectors who find them in antique and second-hand dealers, markets and even at auctions.

Sideburns: a man’s pride

Generally loved or hated, sideburns are undoubtedly a distinctive element of the male appearance. Object of the courses and appeals of fashion, they have taken on the most disparate shapes in the various historical periods among which it is worth remembering:

  • the favorites, like those of Alessandro Manzoni, long from the temples to the chin and possibly connected to the beard;
  • the mutton-chopped sideburns, long, thick and joined to the mustache, which in the second half of the nineteenth century were quite popular since they were worn by the Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria; imitating this sideburns style was considered a sign of admiration for him and loyalty to the Austro-Hungarian government;
  • the straight sideburns, cut a few millimeters below the lobe and just above the height of the tragus. They represent the most classic style and are suitable for both longer and shorter hairs;
  • the pointed sideburns, which gradually taper to form a thin tip and are the extension / completion of a short haircut;
  • the ’60s sideburns, like Elvis Presley’s, long and thick with an asymmetrical and irregular base;
  • the ‘70s sideburns, formed by a strip of hair that reaches up to the jaw, but without going beyond it.

A rather unusual custom, albeit not very widespread, was to wear curled sideburns as the men of some Orthodox Jewish religious communities still do today. This tradition would have originated from a particular interpretation of the biblical texts on the prohibition of shaving the corners of one’s head, hence the custom of not cutting the hair on the sides of the head beyond the bone that connects the skull to the jaw.

To curl the sideburns, irons very similar to those for curling hair were used such as the one we keep in our shop, formed by a wooden handle and a cylindrical metal part that was heated by inserting it in hot coals, on the stove or by placing it on alcohol-powered machines. Once the desired temperature was reached, the hot iron was used to shape sideburns’ hairs.

The irons used to curl the sideburns at Antica Barbieria Colla

Today this tool is no longer used, but if you love sideburns our barbers will be able to advise you on the most suitable style for you.

Antica Barbieria Colla’s characters: Enrico Cuccia

Franco Bompieri met Enrico Cuccia in 1951 at the Continental Hotel where he was hired as a worker; when in 1960 he moved to Antica Barbieria Colla, many of his customers followed him, including the well-known banker. Here’s how he remembers him:

Text taken from Presi per i capelli by Franco Bompieri (Mondadori 2000)

« “He has spoken! Enrico Cuccia has spoken”. In the shop we couldn’t hold back the amazement. For years we had witnessed his ritual arrival: a barely hinted “Good morning” with a lowered gaze, a detached availability to the barber’s tools, an expert look at the newspaper, not at those available from us but at His one, inevitably foreigner, mostly the Financial Times.

Despite the routine, we always worked with him with a certain apprehension, as it was the first time. The shop, regardless of the number of other possible customers, was silent: if anyone spoke it was a whisper. After the service, Enrico Cuccia approached the register, paid, hinted a “Thank you” and a “Good morning”, he went out and alone, his arms crossed behind his back, walked towards Via Filodrammatici, now better known as the street of Mediobanca.

But on that hot summer morning, the order was upset: at a certain moment, Enrico Cuccia pointed to the air conditioner placed near the ceiling and said: “It’s a little cold today”».
